Adhere To Your Purpose

Adhere to your purpose and you will soon feel as well as you ever did. On the contrary, if you falter, and give up, you will lose the power of keeping any resolution, and will regret it all your life.

-Abraham Lincoln

Quintin Campbell was a cadet at West Point in 1862.

He needed to be encouraged as it was reported by his mother that he was not too happy.  In turn the mother spoke to her cousin. Her cousin just happened to be Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of Abraham Lincoln.  As the story unfolds Mary shares the concern with her husband and ask that he reach out to the young cadet to encourage him.  President Lincoln does so and in a heart felt letter he pens the above words https://lincolnscivilwar.wordpress.com/2012/06/28/to-quintin-campbell/ .

Evidently the words resonated with the young officer in training and he stays the course and is eventually commissioned as an officer in the U.S Army in 1866.  According to historical accounts the young officer was assigned to various commands in the western part of the United States. Some of those commands included being stationed in New Mexico, Kansas and the hostile frontier. Eventually he resigned his commission in 1875 and took on the role of editor with the Kansas City Missouri Globe https://books.google.com/books?id=el_U9jnf_aMC&pg=PA77&lpg=PA77&dq=cadet+quintin+campbell&source=bl&ots=MecilMqek0&sig=KaYUhPnqAlolXeOsw2ajXEnWWeM&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjO1q6csd_YAhUwgK0KHcLRB184ChDoATADegQIBxAB#v=onepage&q=cadet%20quintin%20campbell&f=true (click here or cut and paste into your browser).

The young cadet adhered to his purpose and it would seem that this was due in large part to the letter written by President Abraham Lincoln.  This letter was a letter of encouragement written from the heart and experience of a great leader to a young man who seemed to be at a crossroads in his life.

Today, we can take the words of Abraham Lincoln to heart both in our personal life as well as in our professional life.
